THESIS!

Hey Everyone,

Dave had asked me to post some of the work I have been doing in thesis. So here is some of the work I did last semester. Ignore the bad video, my video editing skills aren't really that great, but it shows some of the character rigging I completed with the characters.

Dominance War thumbnail sketches....

So, several of us Big Hugers are entering the new DOMINANCE WAR III competition, so I figured I would post my progress so far.

I have chosen to do some sort of fish-wizardy-guy. These are really just early ideas, I haven't even really settled on exactly how this character will fit into the guidelines of the competition, so harsh criticism and radical thoughts are most welcome:

Life Drawing Sketches

One of these things is not like the others

One from life drawing last night, and the rest from the Georgia Aquarium (really worth the trip if you're ever in the South). Guess which is which!

Finally posting something up here. Some drawings I did from the last CA.org workshop in January.

a shot at graphic design

I have been playing around with creating graphic design type images lately to help improve my sense of design and color usage. Here's one I have worked on lately. The three main objects are actually max models rendered with the toon shader. Any thoughts about what sort of things I could do to improve the image? Thanks!

WIP Alice in Wonderland Rabbit

Have been working on this Rabbit for the Kenji's Alice in Wonderland cards. Just trying to get some finished pieces done to get better with both design and drawing and rendering. It's still inprogress at the moment. The idea here is that the Rabbit is being tortured by the queen, who has strapped on this contraption that constatnly rings loudly into his ears to keep him on task. I'm still experimenting and thinking about good processes to follow when trying to create a finished piece, so any thoughts anyone has that they think would help would be more than welcome!

Thanks!

WIP Mock Turtle

Started this over the weekend for Kenji's Alice in Wonderland idea. This is the Mock Turtle. Lewis just describes him as crying constantly and sitting on the beach missing the ocean. From that, and the fact that Alice is taken to him, and then away from him, I like the idea that he never actually leaves his spot sitting looking at the sea. I'm also playing with the idea that he's been sitting on the beach so long in the same space now his shell is falling off of him.

I'm going to add some more colors in, too. I think he could benefit from some blue washes here and there; maybe some reds.

I looked at the turtle from the Neverending Story a bit for his face.

Archer Finished

I'm done with this one. It went through a lot of iterations but I learned a lot from it. I also discovered new artists along the way to draw some inspiration from.

Some more wip sketches...

Here are couple of stuff I've been working on and off the past couple weeks during lunch and after hours. I have been bouncing back and forth between the two but trying to get them finished soon.

Some old work, one new watercolor

Thought I'd toss some of my old sketchlist work up here... funny how looking through it after not seeing it for awhile how little of it seems as good as your remember - I guess that means you're improving a little? Or just that you realize where you need work more? Either way, I think it's actually a good thing.

This is a new one, actually. I think every year I'm giving this friend of mine a new chapter. The text ended up a little dark, unfortunately.

This is the one from last year, the first one. I prefer it to the new one, actually.

Lady in Dark WIP

I need to work faster so I can finish a painting before I get bored. I was inspired by this mouse pad with art by Wang Wei, an illustrator for Blizzard. I'm really enjoying this one.

Couple of Antarctic oils

Both of these were done earlier this year, but they were also in the show so I thought I'd toss them up here.

The Globe Chaser

Finished! I think I like doing this insane linework stuff. I used to do this kind of work a lot back in college, but it was very time consuming, and not very practical as "concept art portfolio" work, but now that I have a job, maybe I should start doin this kind of stuff as personal work more often.

Also, I am going to start doing all of my concept art in finger-paints... or as mobiles.

New Oils

These are some new oils I did getting ready for the show Aaron and I are in. Most of these are from coastal Georgia.
